Misugaru Coffee (미숫가루 커피)
Misugaru Coffee is a modern twist on a traditional Korean health drink. It blends misugaru (미숫가루) — a powdered mix of roasted grains — with coffee and often milk or water, creating a smooth, nutty, and slightly sweet beverage. It’s caffeine-boosted but packed with nutrients from ingredients like barley, brown rice, black beans, millet, and sesame seeds.
Misugaru itself is traditionally consumed as a cold drink mixed with water or milk and sweetened with honey. Adding coffee brings a unique depth of flavor and gives it an energizing kick — making this drink a wholesome alternative to regular lattes or frappés.
Ingredients (1 serving)
- 2 teaspoons misugaru powder (Korean multigrain powder)
- 1 teaspoon instant coffee or 1 shot espresso
- 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy like oat, soy, almond)
- 1–2 teaspoons honey or sweetener (optional)
- Ice cubes (for iced version)
How to Make It
Iced Misugaru Coffee:
- In a glass or shaker, add misugaru powder, instant coffee, and honey.
- Add a small amount of warm water (2–3 tablespoons) and stir well to dissolve both the misugaru and coffee.
- Add milk and ice cubes, then stir or shake until smooth.
- Serve chilled with a sprinkle of extra misugaru powder on top (optional).
Hot Misugaru Coffee:
- Combine misugaru, instant coffee, and honey in a cup.
- Add a small amount of hot water and stir to dissolve.
- Pour in steamed milk, stir well, and enjoy warm.
Tips:
- For a richer taste, use espresso instead of instant coffee.
- Misugaru is naturally nutty and slightly sweet, so taste before adding extra sweetener.
- Great as a breakfast or snack-time drink thanks to its fiber and protein content.
