Korean Dalgona Coffee (달고나 커피)
What is it?
Dalgona Coffee is a whipped coffee drink that went viral during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Originating from South Korea, it’s named after “dalgona” (달고나) — a Korean honeycomb toffee candy with a light, caramelized flavor. While the drink doesn’t actually contain dalgona, its appearance and taste are reminiscent of the candy.
It’s made by whipping together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water into a fluffy, caramel-colored foam and serving it over cold or hot milk.
Ingredients (1 serving)
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1 cup milk (cold or hot)
- Ice (optional, for iced version)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine instant coffee, sugar, and hot water in a 1:1:1 ratio.
- Using a hand whisk, electric mixer, or milk frother, whip the mixture for about 3–5 minutes until it becomes light, thick, and frothy.
- In a glass, add milk (with or without ice).
- Spoon the whipped coffee over the milk.
- Stir before drinking, or enjoy the layered look first!
Tip:
You can top it with cocoa powder, crushed dalgona candy, or even a sprinkle of sea salt for a twist.
