If you love Korean food, write these dates down: June 29 and 30. That’s when New York City’s Chef Deuki Hong of Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong restaurant visits Charleston for a two-night double-feature.
On night one, Hong, who recently published Koreatown: A Cookbook with co-author Matt Rodbard, will take over Leon’s Oyster Shed for an $80 dinner (plus a copy of the book) where he’ll serve a Korean feast prepared through the lens of Southern food. “We’ll do Korean fried chicken with Carolina gold rice and banchan sides family style,” says Leon’s owner Brooks Reitz.
The next night, Hong will station himself at Little Jack’s Tavern where he’ll be making his own spin on a Korean burger from 9-11 p.m. “We’ll also be serving Korean beer and playing K-Pop as well,” adds Reitz.
The idea for the visit took shape after Reitz became of fan of Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong and discovered he and Hong shared the same mentor, Michael Bonadies, a founding partner in Myriad Restaurant Group. “I’ve been three times and it’s this great place,” he says. Once Reitz discovered he and Hong share a mentor, and a connection was made, plans fell into place.
